OVERVIEW:

Provides engineering evaluations, designs and recommendations for a wide range of power plant equipment and systems.  Provides recommendations based on analyses, calculations, investigations into plant problems, opportunities for improving performance, or to meet new requirements.  Develops system designs, specifications and drawings to define the scope of projects.  Prepares budget estimates, performs financial comparisons of alternatives, and presents budgets for approval.  Manages approved projects through construction, start-up and testing.  Assists the maintenance staff in non-routine repair evaluations, equipment selection, and electrical code review.



Responsibilities:

 

  • 1. Ensures compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations as well as company safety and environmental policies and procedures. Takes action to prevent hazards and noncompliance. Demonstrates and promotes commitment towards a safe work workplace and environmental compliance.
  • 2. Reviews equipment problems such as poor performance, reduced availability, loss of efficiency, or loss of capacity; determines root causes, and proposes and implements solutions.
  • 3. Designs systems and equipment to correct problems or add asset value.
  • 4. Compares alternate solutions and prepares cost/benefit analyses to select the most appropriate choice.
  • 5. Prepares cost and schedule estimates for new projects.
  • 6. Proposes budget requests for new projects.
  • 7. Prepares specification packages (or directs preparation of specification packages by outside sources) for purchasing equipment.
  • 8. Analyzes bids from vendors and selects the most cost effective proposals.
  • 9. Prepares requisitions for materials, labor and engineering assistance.
  • 10. Provides technical support to projects including supervision of contractors, vendors and consultants. Completes projects within budget and schedule constraints.
  • 11. Provides internal consultation to plant operations and maintenance.
  • 12. May serve as Project Manager for several projects simultaneously, with each project having a value of $1,000,000 or greater.
  • 13. Responsible for the "cradle to grave" project scope, including cost, quality and schedule.


Qualifications:

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Five years experience in a directly related position
  • Experience in providing technical support for large (>50 MW) electric power generation system operations, maintenance, and /or construction
  • Ability to exploit Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Access, etc.)
  • Experience in working with multiple drawing formats (cable block, P&IDs, schematic, termination, wiring, etc.)
  • Ability to "connect the dots" during problem solving
  • Good oral and written communication skills required
  • An understanding of power plant electrical engineering practices and related electrical codes
  • Field experience and background related to power plant electrical systems, generators and power plant transmission interconnects
  • An understanding of power plant operations, including the interrelationship of engineering with operation and maintenance functions background is beneficial
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Strong planning capabilities and the skills to analyze and interpret data to make sound recommendations to the Engineering Manager and to Senior Management
  • Strong customer focus (internally & externally)
  • Strong problem solving and organizational skills
  • Ability to stay detail-oriented in a fast-paced setting
  • Ability to accept & adapt to changing priorities
  • Demonstrates initiative and adaptability
  • Willingness to work off-hours as business needs dictate

Preferred:

  • Construction / Startup experience with various electrical systems
  • Programming skills (DCS, PLC, VFD, electronic relays, etc.)
  • Drafting experience (AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.)
  • Computerized Maintenance Management System experience (Maximo)
  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • Member, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
