Job Description
  Overview:

Provides engineering evaluations, designs and recommendations for a wide range of power plant equipment and systems. Recommendations are based on analyses, calculations, and investigations into plant problems, opportunities for improving performance, or to meet new requirements. Develops system designs, specifications and drawings to define the scope of projects. Prepares budget estimates, performs financial comparisons of alternatives, and presents budgets for approval. Manages projects, construction, and start up and testing of systems for approved projects. Assists the maintenance staff in repair evaluations, material selection, and use of new technologies to improve performance and reliability.

 



Responsibilities:
  • Reviews equipment problems such as poor performance, reduced availability, loss of efficiency, or loss of capacity; determines root causes, and proposes and implements solutions to the problem areas.
  • Designs systems and equipment to correct problems.
  • Compares alternate solutions and prepares cost/benefit analyses to select the most appropriate choice.
  • Prepares cost and schedule estimates for new projects.
  • Proposes budget requests for new projects.
  • Prepares specifications and sketches (or directs preparation of drawings by draftspersons) for purchasing equipment.
  • Analyzes bids from vendors and selects the most cost effective proposals.
  • Prepares requisitions for materials, labor and engineering assistance.
  • Manages projects including supervision of contractors, vendors, and consultants to assure projects are completed within budget and schedule constraints.
  • Provides internal consultation to plant operations and maintenance on a variety of subjects.
  • May serve as Project Manager for several projects simultaneously, with each project having a value of $1,000,000 or greater.
  • Responsible for the "cradle to grave" project scope, including cost, quality and schedule.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state and company safety and environmental procedures, taking action to prevent noncompliance and hazards. Promotes an attitude of commitment towards a safe work workplace and environmental compliance, as well as demonstrating that commitment to other departmental areas.


  • Qualifications:
    • Five years experience in a directly related position
    • Must have experience in providing technical support for large (>50 MW) electric power generation systems operations, maintenance, and /or construction.
    • Good oral and written communication skills required.
    • Ability to travel between Mirant Mid-Atlantic facilities is required.
    • Have a thorough understanding of mechanical, thermodynamic and heat transfer principles
    • Field experience and background with related power equipment, systems, and plant performance is a plus.
    • Requires understanding of power plant operations, including the interrelationship of engineering with operation and maintenance functions and familiarity with ASME Performance Test Codes (e.g., PTC 6.1, PTC 4.1, etc.), Power Piping Code, and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code background is beneficial.
    • Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
    • Good oral and written communications skills,
    • Strong planning capabilities and the skills to analyze and interpret data to make sound recommendations to the Engineering Manager and to Senior Management.

    • Possess good hearing and vision
    • Ability to wear a respirator and other job related personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Ability to meet (on an annual basis) appropriate physical evaluations identified by Health and Safety as prerequisites to performing certain task and training activities 

    Preferred:

    • Digital Control Systems experience is desirable.
    • Masters Degree with Mechanical or Chemical Engineering strongly preferred.
    • Licensed Professional Engineer
    • Member of ASME 
    • MBA or PMP
