Job Description

This position is responsible for conducting, maintaining and improving the High Energy Piping Program for the Power Operations Group Generation Fleet. This program is an inspection and assessment program with the purpose of identifying welds and piping components susceptible to failure by creep fatigue and flow accelerated corrosion damage. Identifying these failure mechanisms and the components most vulnerable to failure will help to insure the safety and continued operation of Progress Energy’s plants. The HEP Program consists of both the Remaining Life Analysis (RLA) of the main steam and hot reheat piping systems and the analysis of Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) in the feedwater, condensate, and heater drains systems. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe, effective, quality focused implementation of this program.

Specific Responsibilities
• Promote a comprehensive program that assesses the potential of HEP failures and the risk they pose to the safety of personnel and the reliability of the plants. Also provide guidance as to methods and procedures that can be utilized to minimize or eliminate these risks.
• On an ongoing basis, evaluate the program scope, methods and overall approach with the intent of continually improving the program based on program findings and industry developments.
• Develop long range planning and inspection schedules and budgets for the HEP Program and identify potential reliability/safety issues.
• Plan, coordinate, and conduct HEP Program examination activities at the plants.
o Coordinate among insulators, scaffolding, NDE, HEP Program, plant personnel and others as required to complete work on schedule and on budget
o Document findings and maintain historical database with current and past HEP findings.
o Provide reports to plants and others as needed to communicate program findings and corrective actions.
• Conduct engineering analysis of HEP Program data to determine estimated remaining life and recommended course of action when indications are found. Provide engineering support as required for component replacements.
• Maintain awareness of HEP failures within the industry, assess the potential for such failures to occur within the company's generation fleet, and integrate appropriate actions into the program.

Additionally, this position performs assessments of boiler and piping system components using finite element methods; and performs turbine/generator rotor boresonic analysis.

The successful candidate must possess the following core skills: excellent communications skills (written, verbal and presentation); flexibility (situational and technical); achievement of exceptional results in a safe, efficient and effective manner (high performance); business orientation (understands the priorities of our business and how to achieve results); strategic thinking and problem solving with proven technical abilities; intensity and urgency (driven to achieve results quickly by recognizing and acting on opportunities); and a positive, energetic attitude and approach to problem solving.

Direct experience in technical areas of responsibility.

Bachelor's degree in engineering (not engineering technology program) from an ABET accredited program or a current PE license is required. An international engineering degree will be considered. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree. 5-8 years engineering experience
