We are seeking a Power Plant Maintenance Superintendent to manage the various maintenance activities at our Remote Energy Plants in and around beautiful Colorado Springs. This position is primarily located at the Birdsall Electric Power Plant and will manage the Remote Energy Plants group that operates and maintains a Natural Gas/Oil-fired power plant, several hydroelectric units, several emergency generators and a peak-shaving Propane Air plant.

Typical Responsibilities
This job description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities or qualifications associated with the job. Specific job assignments may include some or all of the following:

  • Supervising staff by making hiring and pay decisions, making work assignments and schedules, and evaluating performance;
  • Preparing and tracking program budgets and expenditures;
  • Determining plant life extension testing methods;
  • Scheduling condition assessment testing for plant equipment;
  • Developing the ten-year outage schedule;
  • Providing direction and support for overhaul of generating units for the planned outages;
  • Providing centralized equipment condition monitoring for all plants;
  • Communicating program mission, goals and objectives to internal staff and outside contractors;
  • Managing projects and contracts;
  • Managing and coordinating database maintenance for plants;
  • Ensuring that all employees comply with the safety and health program in support of an incident and injury free workplace.

 

Therefore the knowledge, skills and abilities we seek include:

  • Supervisory and leadership skills;
  • Proven ability to establish and manage budgets;
  • Project management skills to plan, prioritize, schedule and coordinate multiple projects and work activities;
  • Experience in developing and creating maintenance strategies and programs to optimize equipment life and reliability;
  • Experience with troubleshooting and resolving issues with malfunctioning systems, processes and equipment;
  • Experience with forecasting equipment replacement or reconditioning cycles;
  • Experience with planning for and taking corrective action in emergencies;
  • Ability to analyze and forecast consumption rates, operational loads, and resource requirements;
  • Computer skills including Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Microsoft Project or similar scheduling software;
  • Knowledge and/or hands-on experience with the following:
    • Power plant maintenance, particularly for Hydroelectric, Utilities Boilers Steam turbine/generation power plants
    • Power plant operations, plant systems, and interactions
    • Impact of power plant operations on electric, gas and water systems/operations
    • Applicable codes and best maintenance practices
    • Safety guidelines and procedures
    • Environmental guidelines

 

Education: Most people in this occupation will have a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or a relevant discipline, or substantially demonstrated generating plant Maintenance experience and performance.

Experience
: Candidates for this position typically have six or more years experience as a supervisor in a power plant or utility operations.

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Experience in Hydroelectric, Gas fired power plant and/or Propane Air shaving plant
  • Experience in developing and creating maintenance strategies and programs to optimize equipment life and reliability
  • Experience utilizing advanced project management principles and tools to plan, prioritize, schedule and coordinate multiple projects and work activities
  • Experience establishing and managing budgets
