Responsible for keeping the vessels maintained and operating safely on a regular basis. Supervises the activities of the vessel engineers and mechanics, and assists with maintenance activities during breakdowns, dry dockings and overhauls. Monitors and assists with the maintenance of the vessel firefighting systems and equipment. Investigates and determines cause and preventative measures for all fuel and oil spills. Provides front line supervisory leadership to the Port Engineer Job Family Assists with planning and scheduling main engine and generator overhauls for company vessels
Prepares parts requisition for items required for overhauls
Participates in main engine and generator overhauls to ensure completeness of work performed
Attends dry dockings of assigned vessels as directed by the Superintendent of Engineering and Maintenance or Local Management, and serves as backup for the other as required. Includes the approval of shipyard repairs
Provides the Superintendent of Engineering & Maintenance and Local Management with shipyard repair updates, cost changes and schedule of repairs
Assists with the development of budgets and schedules, contractor selection, quality assurance, contract management, interfacing with regulatory agencies, design groups and shipyards
Assists in the development in specifications and bid packages, participate in the evaluation of bid packages and monitor repairs or new construction actions when carrying out repair activity
Conducts performance evaluations for vessel engineers and mechanics
Assist and participate in the implementation of the training program for engine room personnel
Assists with the implementation of the safety program to ensure that all company vessels maintain a safe working environment. Reports deficiencies to the Superintendent of Engineering and Maintenance, Local Management, and the Safety Committee
Responsible for adherence to company policies and procedures with respect to accident and/or incident reporting
Responsible for the direct implementation of preventative maintenance programs onboard company vessels
Participate in scheduled visits to all vessels on a regular basis to ensure that the vessels are maintained to company standards. Complete vessel inspection reports each visit and include in vessel inspection file for each boat
Assist with the waste management program to ensure compliance with all rules and regulations covering areas of environmental concern. Report deficiencies to the Superintendent of Engineering and Maintenance and Local Management. Maintain waste management files and documentation of all waste correspondence from company vessels
Participate in the drug testing program as required
Assist with crew changes as required
Perform weekend duty rotation as assigned
Assist with vessel new construction projects as assigned
Assist the warehouse manager with warehouse projects as assigned
Responsible for ethical conduct within the department and all dealings with shipyards. Suppliers and vendors
Perform all other duties as required Minimum Requirements Educational Requirements: Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Marine Engineering, or equivalent industry related experience. Experience Requirements Entry level position. Experience in marine engineering in the barge line industry, along with project management experience is a plus. Basic knowledge of vessel maintenance and operation, marine engines, generators, computer systems, and firefighting systems
Must have good computer skills working in Microsoft Office(Word and Excel)
Must be highly motivated and self directed in accomplishing assigned goals with attention to detail.
Required to have a good knowledge of Cat 3508, Twin disc, EMD, Detroit and Cummins.
Must have great people skills and willing to mentor others.
Must have at least 3 years of underwater and or shipyard experience.
