POSITION PURPOSE: Supervises and implements the field aspects of the Radiation protection Program including access control, radiation work permits, radiological surveys, and the use of radiation monitoring instrumentation and respiratory protection equipment. Positions provides direction and oversight for control measures concerning personnel exposure to radioactive materials and associated radiation during routine nuclear plant operations and emergency situations. JOB DIMENSIONS: Supervisory Responsibility - 10-20 radiation protection technicians PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 1. Manages the activities of the Radiation Protection shift personnel. Position ensuring that an adequate staff of qualified Radiation Protection personnel is available to meet site operations and maintenance requirement with respect to radiological conditions. 2. Administer the site Radiation Protection program for plant radiological surveillance. Evaluate both routine and non-routine surveillance and recommends changes to improve the performance of the site Radiation Protection Program. 3. During radiological emergencies, serve as the Radiation Protection representative in the Operations Support Center and/or the Technical Support Center. 4. Perform observations of work in progress and coach individuals as necessary to ensure proper standards and work practices are implemented. 5. Evaluate the performance of assigned radiation protection personnel through formal sign-offs and performance management. 6. Perform radiological planning and preparation to ensure appropriate surveillance for unit outages. 7. Ensures compliance with operating procedures, Technical Specifications, and federal regulations pertaining to radiological controls. 8. Assess radiation exposure control and contamination control procedures and practices and provide direction and supervision to ensure radiological controls are adequate and reflect industry best practices where possible. 9. Participates in the site Work Control process to ensure radiological activities are properly planned and supported. Position provides feedback to the Work Control process to ensure continual improvement. 10. Operate within the approved budget for assigned functional areas. 11. Serves as the Radiation Protection Superintendent as assigned. 12. Responsible for HP technicians work schedule development, implementation, workforce planning, employee development and accountability. MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY FACTORS: Education -An Associate Degree in Science, Engineering or related field or equivalent experience, plus appropriate continuing education is required, a Bachelor's Degree is preferred. Experience - At least four years of applied radiation protection experience. Supervisory experience is desirable. Applicant must meet ANSI 18.1 requirements. Certification/License, etc -Must obtain and maintain requirements for nuclear plant unescorted plant access and S-3 and S-4 qualifications when applicable. Applicant may be required to work rotating shift work and "on-call" rotational assignments which may include 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week availability. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities - Knowledge of nuclear plant health physics and radiation protection and the ability to manage and supervise.
