Job Description

Perform technical and specialized work of a skilled nature in connection with electrical systems, analysis, detection and repair of single loop control systems, electronic devices, communication systems, and instruments such as meters, gauges and regulators, assist others in making tests, surveys and layout work.
Assist in locating and repairing defects in control systems involving electrical, mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic components, using elementary or wiring diagrams, schematic diagrams or control diagrams, along with an extensive knowledge of process control.

Make simple circuit analysis; test, calibrate, adjust and repair relays, electronic devices, meters, communication components and similar circuits and devices, where a thorough knowledge of interrelated circuits is not required.   Perform simple control system monitoring and minor program modifications using a computer interface terminal as directed.

Inspect, adjust, repair and calibrate pressure measurement, transmitting and receiving devices, determining and making corrections necessary for static fluid heads.

Set up, as directed, instrumentation such as electrical, pressure, temperature and flow-sensing devices, manual gas analyzing equipment and chemical testing devices necessary to test various power plant equipment.

Perform necessary functions to place in or remove from service, instruments and control systems undergoing study, tests or adjustments.

Assist in making electrical circuit breaker trip checks and electrical system interlock checks associated with plant electrical control and distribution systems, to determine operating performance of such control equipment.

Perform electrical work such as pull in and terminate cabling for power control and lighting systems and make repairs to same.   Use clamp-on ammeters and voltmeters; clean plant batteries, check and record voltage readings and add electrolyte and adjust charging rate; clean and paint windings; use meggers on equipment as directed; hang and remove grounds under direct supervision.

Blow out and clean lines to control equipment, meters and gauges; clean filters in control systems and install temporary tubing.

Inspect, evaluate and repair indicating and recording devices not connected to trip devices.

Make studies, as assigned, of plant operations and assist in investigations and analysis of electrical generating procedures.

Record data on equipment operation and condition for surveys and technical studies.

Make required equipment checks and assist in performing tests and preparing related reports, graphs and curves.

Assist in checking operation and maintenance projects for compliance with standards and specifications.

Assist in preparing required engineering layouts on projects such as new construction, revisions to existing facilities and on all types of power plant equipment.

Assist in surveying coal storage pile and calculating density of coal to determine quality of coal in storage.

Assist in inspecting boilers, turbines, pumps, heat exchangers and other power plant equipment and in preparing sketches and inspection and maintenance reports.

Be familiar with the operation and maintenance of basic water treating systems, including chemical control, routine testing of effluents, inventory of bulk chemicals, chlorination and lubrication.

Make required equipment checks and assist in performing tests and preparing related reports, graphs and curves.

Assist in checking operations and maintenance projects for compliance with chemical standards and specifications.

Collect and prepare samples, operate sampling equipment and perform tests requiring the use of basic analytical equipment and knowledge of common chemical materials.

Prepare bulk supplies of chemicals to specific concentration; assist in special analyses and tests necessary to regulate proper chemical treatment of system.

Operate, regulate and adjust soot, ash and pyrite disposal equipment, including associated pumps and valving; check operation of circulating water system, cooling towers, deep well pumps and sump pumps; operate trash rake; operate and clean rive revolving screens, including replacement broken shear pins; operate feedwater treatment equipment and back wash filters; operate electrostatic precipitators and other remote equipment as assigned.

Unplug and clean chutes; inspect, clean and remove refuse coal and tramp iron from conveying equipment; operate emergency trip cord to stop conveyor and reset emergency trip cords.

Assist in the operation of coal conveying equipment including feeders, crackers, scalpers, diverter gates and shut-off gates.

Load, unload, move and handle materials, supplies and equipment; open boxes barrels, bags and other materials. Operate material handling equipment including hoists, forklift trucks, skid steer loaders, small tractors and automotive equipment and their associated equipment and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.

Obtain permits and determine that equipment to be worked on has been properly cleared and tagged.

Report irregularities and abnormal conditions to the appropriate supervision.

Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean and order condition.

Perform duties in accordance with Company's safety rules, operating regulations and practices, and report unsafe conditions and practices.

Train for and carry out assignments in fire fighting, first aid and other emergency response programs as required.

Direct the work of employees assigned to assist.

Operate automotive equipment and its associated equipment and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.

Prepare and maintain records as required.

Assist employees as required.

Assist in the training of other employees.

Perform similar or less skilled work.

Minimum Requirements

Must be able to pass an examination, if required, and in addition:



Must satisfactorily complete, in such time frames as may be established by the company, all required training to advance to the Control Technician classification, or vacate the Control Technician-Junior classification.



Must have a two-year Associate Degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.



Must have the knowledge and skill necessary to perform work in the installation, inspection, repair, adjustment, calibration and servicing of instruments and controls.



Must be able to read, interpret and work from simple prints, sketches and specifications.



Must be able to work effectively with other employees and learn to instruct and direct other employees.



Must possess the appropriate State driver's license.



Must obtain and maintain all necessary certification and licenses as required.



Must have a working knowledge of OSHA and Environmental guidelines.



Must have demonstrated the ability to physically and mentally perform work in all areas and heights required.
