Job Description
  Overview:

Serves as Worker’s Compensation and Leave Management Specialist for Mirant and will transition the responsibilities after the merger between Mirant and RRI Energy to the new company – GenOn, located in Houston, Texas. This is a temporary position and the expected duration is 6 to 8 months.



Responsibilities:

Worker’s Compensation Responsibilities:

  • Serve as first point of contact for all Worker’s Compensation injuries, including OSHA case management and prevention of recordable losses and post-accident drug screenings.
  • Coordination of medical case management for all Worker’s Compensation claims in conjunction with the worker’s compensation carrier.  Communications with employees, claims managers, attorneys, rehabilitation nurses, physicians, vocational rehabilitation specialists, and private investigators for all claims; also screening for compensability, reviewing incident/accident investigations, securing claims, medical and return-to-work documentation, and general administrative functions associated with the claim.
  • Coordination of transitional and ongoing working arrangements for employees, including determining eligibility for temporary and permanent modified duty programs, and coordination and planning with managers, supervisors, administration specialists, and safety personnel.
  • Serve as central contact person for all work-related injuries that involve lost workdays. Performs all administrative functions required by individual state statutes, to include: recommending assignment of rehabilitation nurses and vocational specialists, complying with state compensability laws and representing the company regarding inquiries about the program design and structure.
  • Provide education and training to employees, supervisors, and managers regarding Workers’ Compensation guidelines, procedures and laws.

 

Leave Management Responsibilities:

  • Management of all employees requesting a leave of absence from work for Short-term disability, Long-term disability and/or Family Medical Leave through our Leave Management Administrator.  Responsible for communications and coordination with employees, managers, timekeepers, payroll, human resources and the Leave Management Administrator.
  • Manages reports and reporting tools, tracking and claims management.   
  • Serve as central contact person for all leave of absence claims and perform all administrative functions as needed.
  • Provide education and training to supervisors and managers regarding processes, procedures, state and federal legal compliance. 


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Health Care Administration, Environmental Health & Safety, Worker’s Compensation/Disability Management, or other related field.
  • Ability to maintain effective communication with employees, attorneys, claim representatives, insurance vendors, medical professionals, managers/supervisors, and safety coordinators.
  • Ability to independently assess an occupational/non-occupational injury/illness, develop and implement a case management plan, including return to work coordination.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and negotiating skills.  Requires highly developed relational, analytical and verbal skills as well as ability to deliver message orally or in written format.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Worker’s Compensation, Family and Medical Leave Act administration and Short Term/Long Term Disability, and Salary Continuation programs.
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures of claim evaluation to include: claim investigation and claim settlement techniques, medical, insurance, and legal terminology related to the cause and treatment of occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Able to counsel employees, resolve complaints and disputes.
  • Conduct routine evaluations and updates of medical professionals and facilities utilized by Mirant employees.
