Job Description

NAES Corporation, a leading provider of 3rd party O&M services to the Independent Power Industry, is currently recruiting for the following position:

The Lockport facility generates steam and electric power using three combustion turbine generators followed by three recovery steam generators and a steam turbine generator. The plant is designed to generate 168.8 megawatts of electricity while providing up to 315,800 pounds per hour of process steam.

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Power Plant Specialist (PPS) is responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis. The PPS responds to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions and executes plant shutdown and startup procedures as required. The PPS assures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe, productive and efficient manner.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

Conduct all startup, shutdown and load changing operations on the plant. Control all auxiliary systems and supporting equipment.

Report upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the O&M Supervisor or Plant Manager.

Ensure that the plant is in compliance with all environmental and safety programs at all times.

Perform remedial and preventative maintenance to repair and/or maintain plant equipment.

Receive and respond to electrical and fuel dispatcher's orders and requests.

Communicate with greenhouse personnel in regards to steam demand and operating and maintenance concerns of both the greenhouse and power plant.

Monitor and record plant output as well as all flows, pressures, temperatures, levels, and other information pertaining to operation of the plant.

Take immediate corrective action in response to emergency situations to minimize safety hazards, and to reduce damage or downtime to the plant and its equipment.

Perform tests and analyses of instrumentation and control systems.

Provide direction to Power Plant Technician to affect changes in plant conditions and chemistry.

Complete other tasks as requested by the Senior Power Plant Specialist, O&M Supervisor, or Plant Manager.

PPS - Mechanic Supplemental Duties

Participate in the plant's preventive maintenance program by performing routine maintenance duties, including the collection of trending information for the O&M Supervisor.

Set up and operate machine shop tools in the performance of all machine work to close tolerances. Align and balance rotating equipment.

Assemble and repair tubing, piping, valves and fittings subjected to both high and low temperature or pressure, or where certified welding is required.

PPS - IC&E Supplemental Duties

Inspect, repair, install and remove all types of motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal and communication systems, and storage batteries, and work with electrical systems up to and including 4160 volts.

Conduct trouble shooting and analysis on DCS, PLC, and gas and steam turbine control equipment.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

This position operates from established and well-known procedures, performing duties under general direction and minimum supervision. Decisions are made within prescribed operating procedures and guidelines. The position encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm.

The PPS has the authority to control the operation of the plant, and must do so in a safe manner resulting in no accidents and be in compliance with all environmental permits at all times. This position must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvement.

All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customers' needs are being met.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The PPS reports to the O&M Supervisor. The PPS cooperates with and responds to suggestions from the Senior PPS. The PPS may give direction to Power Plant Technicians.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include; working on feet for extensive periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and others must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required.

This position requires extended working hours and varied shifts including weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On Call" status may periodically be required.

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school is required.
  • Two years experience as a Power Plant Technician, Assistant Plant Operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant is required.
  • An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable.
  • Experience in water chemistry control, water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations and chemical-handling requirements is required.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine and HRSG operations, closed system generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable.
  • Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable.
  • Extensive working knowledge of the power plant industry is desirable.
  • Must successfully complete a plant operator's knowledge examination.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Must have a valid driver's license. Must meet all requirements of the Power Plant Technician Position Description.

PPS - Mechanic Supplemental Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Four years experience as a power plant mechanic, millwright or equivalent required. Experience in turbines, pumps, HVAC, welding or machining is highly desirable. Must successfully complete a Maintenance Mechanics test.

PPS - IC&E Supplemental Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited Instrument Technical Program and two years work experience as a technician in a related industry is desirable. Four years experience as a technician with increasing responsibility in a related industry may be substituted for the above requirement. Must successfully complete an IC&E test. Must have strong personal computer skills. Experience in working with voltages up to 4160 volts highly desirable.
