Job Description

Position will require first level supervision of hourly crews engaged in Chemical and Industrial Hygiene responsibilities of a power plant. Supervise lab technicians in the laboratory analysis of coal, lubricants, water, air, chemicals and other material in connection with power plant operation and maintenance. This position includes providing technical and manpower support to ensure plant compliance with governmental   and environmental health and safety regulations. Principal Accountability: Maintain and ensure safe working conditions, use of proper tools, and equipment, and protective clothing and devices. This includes housekeeping activities and the use of root cause analysis or other methods in order to maintain a safe work environment. Oversee and supervise safety training of assigned employees.   

Monitor compliance with plant permits, procedures, and work practices related to permits and other regulatory programs.

Provide for laboratory analysis, environmental,   and industrial hygiene training of employees.

Assume responsibility for the use and maintenance of all laboratory equipment , material, and facilities.

Supervise the collection and evaluation of data necessary in the maintenance of boiler water chemistry. Supervise the maintenance of proper standards of sampling, preparing, and testing of coal, ash, water, and other materials. Determine and recommend prompt chemical adjustments to protect condensers, condensate feedwater systems, boiler, turbine, and cooling towers from scale and corrosion.   
Controls of   FGD scrubbers and Chloride Purge Stream facilities are also included in these responsibilities.   

Responsible for the performance of moderately complex chemical analyses, tests and investigations or assist in performing more complex activities with limited instruction and monitoring by more senior personnel, following established procedures requiring the application of sound scientific knowledge, judgement and skills, participate in the development of relevant procedures and methods in the safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.
Perform moderately complex chemical analyses of coal, water, chemicals, air and other materials with limited instruction and monitoring by more senior personnel.

Outline and prepare moderately complex test procedures, supervise the installation operation and maintenance of test equipment.

Perform special analyses and investigations and prepare written reports as required to support changing lab operating conditions.

Evaluate and recommend improvements to materials used in lab operations.

Collect and evaluate data necessary to comply with federal, state and local environmental regulations.

Assist in the administration of environmental, health and safety programs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

Assist in directing the collection, preparation and analyses of coal samples.

Maintain proper standards in the sampling, preparation and testing of all materials.

Keep abreast of new methods, innovations and technology relative to the assigned area of work and the associated equipment and materials.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education:    Bachelor degree in chemistry, or equivalent.

Experience:   Chemical or environmental experience is required. Six   years experience including four years   experience in a plant chemical laboratory or related utility or industrial chemical experience in the analysis of most of the following:   coal, air, lubricants, ash, water, etc. or equivalent.
