Job Description

NAES Corporation, a leading provider of 3rd party O&M services to the Independent Power Industry, is currently recruiting for the following position:

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Chemical Technician maintains water/steam chemistry in specification at the plant.  The Chemical Technician carries out all routine water chemistry sampling and analysis, and operates water treatment equipment.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

Performs technical and analytical services essential to assure the safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally compatible operations of a fossil fuel plant.

Performs and analyzes samples of condensate, feedwater, sewage, wastewater, bearing cooling and steam systems, coal and coal ash.

Operates and maintains water treatment plant for Operations of demineralized water and service water.

Operates and maintains condensate polishing demineralization equipment.

Performs analytical testing and monitor plant effluents.

Calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment and instrumentation.

Maintains bulk chemical and laboratory supplies inventory.

Performs environmental inspections.

Performs other related duties as directed.

Participate in the maintenance of the plant chemistry manual and all technical references, prints, diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance records associated with water treatment equipment.

Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of the work and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions.

Assist maintenance personnel during the shutdown of any water treatment system.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

The Chemical Technician operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision performing duties independently with only general direction given. The Lab Tech/ APO encounters recurring work situations of moderate complexity, with occasional variations from the norm.  Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines.

The Chemical Technician must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, and in compliance with all environmental permits at all times.  The Chemical Technician must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow operation and maintenance personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvements.  The Chemical Technician must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.

All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer's needs are being met.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Chemical Technician reports to the Chem Supervisor and may periodically receive direction from the Plant Manager or Operations Manager.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include:  working on feet for 12 hour periods, stair and ladder climbing, routine lifting 50 pounds, and heavy cleanup work.  Wearing of uniform work clothing, if provided by NAES Corporation, is required.  Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.).  Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Position may require extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions.  "On call" status will periodically be required.

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program.  This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post employment random drug screening.  There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree Biology, Chemistry or related field is preferred.
  • Experience in water treatment, power plant, or chemical industry is preferred. (0 - 3 years)
  • Knowledge of chemistry analytical procedures, laboratory techniques, on-line chemistry monitoring equipment and state-of-the-art laboratory analyzers is preferred.
  • General knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance requirements is preferred. 
  • Computer Skills: MS Word, Excel and Power Point.
