Job Description

NAES Corporation, a leading provider of 3rd party O&M services to the Independent Power Industry, is currently recruiting for the following position:

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Assistant Plant Operator (APO) is responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis.  The APO responds to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions and executes plant shut-down and start-up procedures as required.  The APO assures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner.  Responsible for the safe and efficient operation, testing, inspection, and maintenance of all equipment related to an electrical generation facility. 

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

Is knowledgeable and adheres to all safety procedures including lock-out/tag-out and the use of personal protective equipment.

Operates equipment safely and with the intent to minimize risk to personnel and equipment.

Operates/maintains plant equipment at maximum operating efficiency.

Contributes to plant profitability by eliminating wasted materials and supplies and maintaining high productivity.

Performs necessary maintenance activities.

Writes and maintains equipment logs, operational logs, and other reports as required in a clear professional manner. Is able to read, understand and respond to written instructions and logbook notations. Maintains readings, records and reports.

Participates in daily preventative, scheduled, and corrective maintenance activities in a safe, effective, and timely manner.

Provides assistance with plant clean-up and housekeeping activities as required.

Understands and follows regulatory requirements.

Establishes good working relations with teammates, team leaders, plant technical experts, and engineers.

Operates station vehicles such as forklifts, trucks, overhead cranes, and mobile cranes.

Reviews instruction manuals and develops troubleshooting procedures for equipment.

Demonstrates ability to use plant drawings, blueprints, and manuals.

Demonstrates knowledge of equipment layout and plant systems

Report upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the Shift Supervisor

Make entries in the Operating Log and approve and issue Tag outs as required.

Receive and respond to electrical, steam and fuel dispatcher's orders and requests.

Perform emergency operations to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment.

Provide information to CRO to effect changes in plant conditions and chemistry.

Performs other duties as required.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

The APO operates from established and well-known procedures under general directions and minimum supervision.  Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines. The APO encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm.

The APO has the authority to affect the operation of the plant, and must do so in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, in compliance with all environmental permits at all times.  The APO must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvements.  The APO must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.

All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer's needs are being met.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The APO reports to the Shift Supervisor. The APO may also give information to maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to plant operations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include:  working on feet for 12 hour periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.).  Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required. Infrequent overnight travel required; Rotating shift work is required.

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program.  This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post employment random drug screening.  There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.  Minimum two years experience as an APO or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant required.  Associate Degree in a technical field desirable. Must successfully complete the APO qualification card. Must successfully complete a Mechanical Aptitude test and a Basic Mathematical test.
