Job Description

Perform highly skilled work and direct the work of others in the maintaining, repairing, inspecting, installing, rebuilding and construction of all types of power plant equipment and structures and correct the causes of trouble that develops in such equipment.
Diagnose trouble, repair,   and maintain mechanical equipment, pneumatic and hydraulic systems such as the   repair and align turbine-generators and their components; overhaul boiler feed pumps and other types of pumps; inspect and rebuild air compressors; inspect boilers and boiler apparatus and report as necessary.

Operate machine shop and portable machine equipment such as lathes, shapers, drill presses, milling machines, boring bars and similar machining equipment to produce accurate tolerance on all shapes including those not readily machined on standard machine tools.   Develop jigs and fixtures as necessary and perform precision fitting of component parts as required.   Perform alignment on rotating equipment and other types of equipment.      Use monitoring equipment such as vibration and thermal test equipment to assess equipment conditions.   

Perform all position electric arc and oxyacetylene structural and pipe welding on equipment such as fittings, fans and fan lining, pulverizers, coal pipes, conveyors, tractors, screens, steel structures, heaters, evaporators, brazing work as may be required on such items; metal spray items for wear and abrasion purposes, such as recirculating gas fan runners and wear plates; P.A. fan runners and casings and conveyor pulleys; perform silver soldering such as tubing, piping and common connection.   Work requiring the use of and ability of a certified welder is excluded.

Perform heat treatment of metals such as tempering, case hardening, etc.

Erect and remove scaffolding, rigging and blocking.

Operate automotive equipment and its associated equipment and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.

Prepare and maintain records as required.

Maintain equipment, tools and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.

Perform duties in accordance with AEP safety rules, operating instructions, all applicable environmental and safety rules and regulations and current practices.

Report irregularities and abnormal conditions to the appropriate supervision.

Instruct and direct other employees assigned to assist in the work.

Assist in the training of other employees in work of this nature.

Train for and carry out assignments in fire fighting, first aid and other emergency response programs as required.

Assist employees as required.

Work rotating shifts, if necessary, during unit outages

Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent education and experience. Associate degree in technical or scientific field preferred.



Journey Level

Must have performed the duties of preceding Machinist positions, or possess the equivalent relevant job experience and have maintained all the appropriate qualifications and must be able to pass an examination, as required, and in addition:



Should have 10,000 hours of power plant experience or equivalent.



Must have a thorough working knowledge of the layout, construction and functions of the equipment and apparatus in and about the plant property.



Must have a thorough working knowledge of plant maintenance, materials, practices, tools, rigging, scaffolding and blocking involved in the work.



Must be able to read, interpret and work from complex prints and specifications.



Must have a thorough working knowledge of equipment clearance procedures and the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work.



Must possess the appropriate State driver's license.



Must obtain and maintain all necessary certifications and licenses as required.



Respond to callouts to maintain and support business operational needs and schedules.



Successful completion of the Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test is required for this position. Experience with turbine/generator disassembly,re-assembly, and alignment, turbine valve maintenance, and large motor and pump alignment preferred
