Job Description

The Chemist, 1st year is responsible for the performance of routine chemical analyses, tests and investigations or assist in performing more complex activities with   instruction and monitoring by more senior personnel, following established procedures requiring the application of fundamental scientific knowledge and skills in the safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.   Monitor boiler water quality by use of standardized tests, operate and monitor plant sewage treatment plant, operate and monitor plant water treatment facility, monitor scrubber chemistry (Pirkey) conduct sampling and perform tasks associated with federal and state laws associated with water and wastewater.
Perform routine chemical analyses of coal, water, chemicals, air and other materials or assist in performing more complex analyses with instruction and monitoring by more senior personnel.

Outline and prepare routine test procedures as directed by supervision.

Assist in the installation and operation of test equipment.

Assist in performing special analyses and investigations and prepare written reports as required to support changing lab operating conditions.

Assist in evaluating and recommending improvements to materials used in lab operations.

Assist in the collection and evaluation of data necessary to comply with federal, state and local environmental regulations.

Assist in the administration of environmental, health and safety programs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

Assist in   the collection, preparation and analyses of coal samples,boiler water, boiler feed samples, scrubber slurry and sludge samples and environmental samples.

Maintain proper standards in the sampling, preparation and testing of all materials.

Demonstrate initiative in personal development to improve technical competence.

Keep abreast of new methods, innovations and technology relative to the assigned area of work and the associated equipment and materials.

Perform internal inspections of the boiler, D.C. heater, condenser and demineralizer vessels.

Maintain calibration of on-line instrumentation for boiler water quality monitoring and maintain records of lab instrument calibration for environmental audits.

Operate and monitor plant sewage facility.

Operate and monitor water treatment facilities.

Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Must be able to deliver samples to off site lab facilities.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements:   

BS. in chemistry, mineral processing or equivalent education and/or experience.   



This is an entry level position.

Responsible for the coordination of all activities pertaining to the Laboratory, and for the maintenance and proper use of approximately $150,000 worth of equipment and for initiating requisitions for supplies and equipment necessary for the proper operation of the Laboratory.



Must comply with all safety rules and regulations.



Respond to callouts to maintain and support business operational needs and schedules.



Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written.
