Job Description

Coordinates, manages, and administers AEP’s Distribution construction contractor safety programs including program development, assessment, training and execution.   Serves as the lead AEP interface with contractors on matters regarding safety performance system wide.   Manages the formal AEP contractor safety qualification process, which is the cornerstone for becoming an AEP Distribution qualified contractor.
Serves as a primary management advisory position to AEP Distribution’s senior management on matters regarding contractor safety policy, administration and specific contractor qualifications.

Serves as a primary interface with contractor senior executive management (CEOs, VPs, and Chief Safety Officers) regarding matters concerning safety.

Responsible for development and coordination of all aspects of AEP Distribution’s contractor safety program including being the primary Distribution interface with Corporate Environment Safety and Health, Transmission, and Generation on matter pertaining to contractor safety.

Responsible for development, enforcement and coordination of all aspects of AEP Distribution’s Safety Terms and Conditions for all contracted work activities accommodating requirements of an annual capital program across 11 states.

Manages and maintains confidential contractor employee safety performance databases and prepares and disseminates safety information and reports to management.

Provides necessary training and active direction regarding contractor safety oversight for Distribution Construction Coordinators, Line Representatives and Utility Foresters for the entire AEP 11-state area.


Manage and administer contractor outsource activity as it pertains to professional safety consultation and OSHA training as well as outsourced AEP construction safety managers for major projects.

Responsible for recommending safety policies to meet AEP safety objectives in concert with state and federal occupational safety and health regulations that impacts Distribution contractors system wide.

Keep current with federal state occupational safety and health regulations including OSHA and provide for uniform interpretations in conjunction with AEP Safety and Health.

Demonstrate the highest standards of ethical behavior and support the Company’s Corporate compliance policy.

Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor Degree Industrial Hygiene of Safety related curriculum or equivalent education and/or experience.   Minimum of 8 years experience in industrial safety administration or equivalent related experience, including experience initiating and facilitating safety training and maintaining safety programs. Extensive knowledge of OSHA standards.   Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
