Reports to Manager, West Transmission Planning. Responsible for performing transmission planning activities, system improvement projects, and project justification utilizing AEP standards, in coordination with transmission, distribution and other work groups for the AEP transmission system located in the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). Job duties include analyzing, studying, and documenting transmission system upgrades to meet AEP, SPP, and NERC criteria and standards.

Applicant should possess intermediate level transmission planning knowledge, demonstrating proficiency in the application and theory and analytical techniques to solve power system problems; keep abreast of new products, developments, technologies, procedures, and equipment; understand and analyze interrelationships between systems and component equipment; interpret codes and regulations; assist in the development of standards relevant to transmission planning; uses initiative in seeking opportunities and presenting new ideas and approaches; demonstrates the highest standards of ethical behavior and supports AEP’s Corporate Compliance Policy; interacts with people in an open, polite, and sincere manner, respecting and encouraging diversity.

The Transmission Planning Engineer will perform power flow simulation and short circuit analysis for the AEP transmission system in order to determine upgrades necessary to maintain compliance with applicable criteria. Responsibilities include project documentation, modeling, and performance monitoring. Job will include communication with RTO staff on transmission planning and operational issues. Engineers will perform work activities as assigned/coached by the lead engineer in order to assume leadership role in project development.

Technical expertise: possesses technical knowledge in power systems; gains familiarity with standards, codes and regulations relevant to the area of assignment; gains familiarity with pertinent equipment, materials, systems and business processes; assists lead engineers in handling delegated portions of routine engineering or analysis; prepares basic cost estimates using established standards; develops understanding of work flow of routine engineering projects; accomplishes work according to plan and schedule established by the lead engineer.

Bachelors degree in engineering technology in a program accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).   On the effective date of this position description, incumbents in the engineering technology family may not be promoted to a higher level without the above degree or a waiver approved by an officer reporting to the chairman.

Engineer Technologist must possess engineering skills in problem solving and computer literacy with oral and written communication skills. Engineering work experience in transmission planning is preferred.

The job requires 40 hours per week, with routine overtime as needed to meet assigned project schedule deadlines. Project responsibilities dictate occasional travel, some overnight, to AEP work locations in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma and to RTO meetings at various locations.
