Job Description
This position is a hiearchy and may be filled at the Production Specialist I or II level.
This position is designed to utilize technical expertise in a particular area of specialty in support of operations and maintenance across the Xcel fleet. These specialty areas may be, but not limited to, Controls, Electrical, Turbine-Generator/Rotating Equipment, Boilers, Plant Performance, Metallurgy, Welding, NDE, or Reliability. Position requires extensive interfacing with many departments and plants. Responsibilities are generally 50% in technical support, 30% in outage support, and 20% in maintaining fleet-wide programs and processes. Position would focus primarily in the Energy Supply facilities. Extensive travel may be required within the assigned region of responsibility.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Under the guidance and supervision of the department manager, coordinate and evaluate station maintenance programs on a daily basis to increase facility reliability.
  • Provide technical/maintenance direction and alternatives for control systems and major equipment problems to appropriate crews.
  • Provide major facility maintenance project supervision for scheduled and unscheduled outages.
  • Write specifications and purchase requisitions for services and/or items to support departmental needs.
  • Coordinate Energy Supply's RCOM program and monitor facility efforts to increase reliability.
  • Develop, improve, and implement computerized scheduling techniques for major component outage processes.
  • Perform equipment analysis and inspection to accurately make recommendations for corrective action when necessary.
  • Act as liaison between contactors/service providers and the Company. Interface with the State Inspector and authorized insurance agent, and other regulatory agencies. Write specifications and purchase requisitions to support Production Resources activities.

Successful applicants will have the following:

College level coursework and/or work experience demonstrating knowledge of standard engineering principles, practices and techniques required.


NDE Specialty area prefers an associates degree or equivalent post secondary education and significant formal training in NDE and inspection technology. Extensive experience in application of various inspection technologies preferred. Significant experience interpreting codes and standards, quality assurance and administrative work controls preferred. Hold certifications in various NDE methods preferred. ASNT Level III in one or more methods preferred: VT, ET, MT, PT, RT, and UT. ASNT Level III in UT with PA experience preferred.

Requires extensive travel to support long duration projects and subject to 24/7 hour call out. Requires non-typical work schedule including shift work, weekend and holiday work and occasional significant extended work hours for long duration projects.

Requires a significant amount of time working in a power plant environment which may involve conditions such as extreme temperatures, confined spaces, noise, and air quality conditions requiring proper use of personal protective equipment.
