Job Description

This position is posted in the following range:
Instrument Repairman Appr 2nd Yr (Salary grade S33)
Instrument Repairman Appr 3rd Yr (Salary grade S25)
Instrument Repairman Appr 4th Yr (Salary grade S19)


*Note: Education and relevant experience will be used to determine appropriate salary and salary grade.


Assist in performing technical and specialized work of a skilled safe, conscientious nature in connection with electrical systems; analysis, detection and repair of single loop control systems, electronic devices, communication systems, and instruments such as meters, gauges and regulators; assist others in making tests, surveys and layout work.

1.   Assist in locating and repairing defects in control systems involving electrical, mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic components, using elementary or wiring diagrams, schematic diagrams or control diagrams, along with an extensive knowledge of process control.

2.   Assist in making simple circuit analysis; test, calibrate, adjust and repair relays, electronic devices, meters, communication components and similar circuits and devices, where a thorough knowledge of interrelated circuits is not required.   Assist in performing simple control system monitoring and minor program modifications using a computer interface terminal as directed.

3.   Assist in inspecting, adjusting, repairing and calibrating pressure measurement, transmitting and receiving devices, determining and making corrections necessary for static fluid heads.

4.   Set up, as directed, instrumentation such as electrical, pressure, temperature and flow-sensing devices, manual gas analyzing equipment and chemical testing devices necessary to test various power plant equipment.

5.   As assigned, perform necessary functions to place in or remove from service, instruments and control systems undergoing study, tests or adjustments

6.   Assist in making electrical circuit breaker trip checks and electrical system interlock checks associated with plant electrical control and distribution systems, to determine operating performance of such control equipment.

7.   Blow out and clean lines to control equipment, meters and gauges; clean filters in control systems and install temporary tubing where required.

8.   Assist in inspecting, evaluating and repairing indicating and recording devices not connected to trip devices.

9.   Assist in making studies, as assigned, of plant operations and assist in investigations and analysis of electrical generating procedures.

10.   Record data on equipment operation and condition for surveys and technical studies as directed.

11.   Learn to make equipment checks and assist in performing tests and preparing related reports, graphs and curves.

12.   Assist in checking operation and maintenance projects for compliance with all standards and specifications.

13.   Assist in preparing required engineering layouts on projects such as new construction, revisions to existing facilities and on all types of power plant equipment including keeping drawings updated with any changes.

14.   Assist in inspecting boilers, turbines, pumps, heat exchangers and other power plant equipment and in preparing sketches and inspection and maintenance reports.

15.   Become familiar with the operation and maintenance of basic water treating systems, including chemical control, routine testing of effluents, inventory of bulk chemicals, chlorination and lubrication where required.

16.   Learn to install, maintain, and repair tubing, including silver and soft soldering for instrument and controls.

17.   Assist in checking operations and maintenance projects for compliance with chemical standards and specifications where required.

18.   Assist in collecting and preparing samples, operating sampling equipment and performing tests requiring the use of basic analytical equipment and knowledge of common chemical materials.

19.   Assist in preparing bulk supplies of chemicals to specific concentration; assist in special analyses and tests necessary to regulate proper chemical treatment of system where required.

20.   Learn to operate, regulate and adjust soot, ash and pyrite disposal equipment, including associated pumps and valves; check operation of circulating water system, cooling towers, sump pumps; operate electrostatic precipitators and other remote equipment where required.

21.   Load, unload, move and handle materials, supplies and equipment; open boxes barrels, bags and other materials. Operate material handling equipment including hoists, fork-lift trucks, skid steer loaders, small tractors and automotive equipment and their associated equipment and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.

22.   Report irregularities and abnormal conditions to the appropriate supervision.

23.   Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean and order condition.

24.   Perform duties in accordance with Company's safety rules, operating regulations and practices, and report unsafe conditions and practices.

25.   Train for and carry out assignments in fire fighting, first aid and other emergency response programs as required.

26.   Operate automotive equipment and its associated equipment and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.

27.   Prepare and maintain records as required.

28.   Assist employees as required.

29.   Assist in the training of other employees.

30. Perform other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Associate degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Controls, or   equivalent.

Successful completion of the Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test is required for this position.   A review of Employment Testing Information, Test-Taking Tips, and the MASS Practice Test may be helpful.   A link to these materials may be found at AEP.com Careers by selecting Employment testing.

Successful candidate must live or be willing to relocate within 60 minutes of the plant.

Must have the knowledge and skill necessary to perform work in the installation, inspection, repair, adjustment, calibration and servicing of instruments and controls.

Must be able to read, interpret and work from simple prints, sketches and specifications.

Must be able to work effectively with other employees and learn to instruct and direct other employees.

Must obtain and maintain all necessary certification and licenses as required.

Must have a working knowledge of applicable environmental guidelines.

Must have demonstrated the ability to physically and mentally perform work in all areas and heights required.

Instrument Repairman Apprentice 2nd Yr must have performed the duties of, and maintained all the qualifications of an Instrument Repairman Apprentice 1st Year, or the equivalent, and must be able to pass an examination and/or demonstration as determined by the Company, and in addition:
Should have 2,000 hours of power plant or equivalent experience as an Instrument Repairman Apprentice 1st Year or the equivalent.

Instrument Repairman Apprentice 3rd Yr Must have performed the duties of, and maintained all the qualifications of an Instrument Repairman Apprentice 2nd Year, or the equivalent, and must be able to pass an examination and/or demonstration as determined by the Company, and in addition:

Should have 4,000 hours of power plant or equivalent experience, of which 2,000 hours should haIve been as an Instrument Repairman Apprentice 2nd year or the equivalent.

Instrument Repairman Apprentice 4th Yr Must have performed the duties of, and maintained all the qualifications of Instrument Repairman Apprentice 3rd Year, or the equivalent, and must be able to pass an examination and/or demonstration as determined by the Company, and in addition:
Should have 6,000 hours of power plant or equivalent experience, of which 2,000 hours should have been as a Instrument Repairman Apprentice 3rd Year or the equivalent.

Must have sufficient experience in the use of power plant instrumentation to have a working knowledge of process control.

Must have the working knowledge and skill needed to calibrate and adjust plant instruments and controls, and be capable of detecting and making repairs to complex control systems.
