Job Description

This position is posted in the following range:

Electrician Apprentice 2nd Yr (Salary grade S37)
Electrician Apprentice 3rd Yr (Salary grade S31)
Electrician Apprentice 4th   Yr (Salary grade S22)

Assist in performing technical and specialized work of a skilled nature in connection with electrical and electronic systems, communication systems, instrument and control systems, equipment interlocks, computers, annunciator systems and records.

1.   Assist in the location and repair of defects in control systems involving electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic components, using   wiring diagrams, schematic diagrams, logic diagrams or control diagrams.

2.   Assist in: Inspect, adjust, repair and calibrate electrical equipment and devices according to established settings and performance standards.

3.   Assist in: Install, calibrate and maintain single-element control systems and multiple-element control systems.

4.   Assist in: Inspect the various component parts of instruments and control systems; make adjustments or replacements to remedy faults in those not functioning properly.

5.   Assist in : Perform necessary functions to place in or remove from service, instruments, devices and control systems undergoing study, tests or adjustments.

6.   Assist in the following: dismantle, overhaul, reassemble and install electrical equipment in the performance of duties such as placing and removing protective grounds in accordance with clearance orders or switching instructions; install and fit brushes on motors and generators; perform repair work on motors and generators, such as patch damaged insulation, rewedge or relash coils and replace bearings; locate and correct trouble on power circuits for plant equipment such as pulverizers, fans and pumps, using test equipment necessary; install and maintain plant lighting circuits; install conduit; pull and splice cable.   Inspect switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers and disconnects for conditions such as temperature, oil level, nitrogen, pressure, loose or damaged connections; make necessary adjustment and repairs;

7.   Assist in the following: Diagnose trouble and maintain electrical equipment in the performance of duties such as inspect and repair faults on transformers, auxiliary and protective relays, circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnects, conveyors, motors, generators; make calculations of power and power factor for three-phase circuits; analyze circuits by use of prints or special instruments such as voltage or circuit tester; correct circuit unbalance; install, repair and relocate switchboard control panels and wiring; make and terminate cable connections.   Make electrical circuit breaker trip checks to determine operating performance of power distribution system.   Place and remove protective grounds in accordance with clearance orders or switching instructions.

8.   Assist in the calibration and maintenance of scales on conveyors, rail, roadways, etc.   Assist in the performance of weight of material test of the scales as directed.

9.   Assist in making layouts for installation of equipment, new construction and remodeling of buildings; check projects for compliance with standards and specifications.

10.   Assist others in preparing necessary data for engineering procedures, specifications, contracts, bills of material and requisitions for the installation, maintenance and operation of equipment.

11.   Assist in making electrical circuit breaker trip checks and electrical system interlock checks associated with plant electrical control and distribution systems, to determine operating performance of such control equipment.

12.   Assist in the set up and connect testing devices used in tests on equipment such as boilers, turbines, generators, motors and other power plant equipment; assist others in the performance of such tests.

13.   Inspect boilers, turbines, generators and other power plant equipment, make working sketches for repairs and prepare inspection and maintenance reports.

14.   Have a basic knowledge of equipment necessary to obtain temperatures, pressures, and flows to obtain accuracy required; analyze data and calculate test results, applying general knowledge of fluid flow and thermodynamics, using available handbooks, manuals and associated referenced material.

15.   Operate small machine tools in the course of performing job functions.

16.   Assist in installing, connecting test equipment, and making tests on boilers, turbines, generators and other power plant equipment; maintain test equipment.

17.   Operate equipment such as forklifts, man lifts, vehicles and its associated equipment and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.

18.   Prepare and maintain records as required.

19.   Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.

20.   Perform duties in accordance with Company's safety rules, all applicable environmental and safety rules and regulations, operating regulations and practices and report unsafe conditions and practices.

21.   Train for and carry out assignments in fire fighting, first aid, CPR and other emergency response programs as required.

22.   Assist employees as required.

23.   Report irregularities and abnormal conditions to the appropriate supervision.

24. Perform similar or less other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Associate degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent.

Successful completion of the Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test is required for this position.   A review of Employment Testing Information, Test-Taking Tips, and the MASS Practice Test may be helpful.   A link to these materials may be found at AEP.com Careers by selecting Employment testing.

Successful candidate must live or be willing to relocate within 60 minutes of the plant.

Electrician App 2nd Yr
Must have performed the duties of Apprentice Electrician 1st Year, and maintained all the appropriate qualifications of Apprentice Electrician 1st Year, or the equivalent, and must be able to pass an examination and/or demonstrations as determined by the Company and in addition:

Should have 2,000 hours of power plant experience or equivalent.

Must understand the basic plant processes or equivalent processes.

Must have the working knowledge and skill needed to safely work on low voltage systems and to ensure that they are safe to work on.   

Electrician Appr 3rd Yr

Must have performed the duties of Apprentice Electrician 2nd year or equivalent, and maintained all the appropriate qualifications of Apprentice Electrician 2nd, or the equivalent, and must be able to pass an examination and/or demonstrations as determined by the Company and in addition:

Should have 4,000 hours of power plant experience or equivalent.

Must have sufficient experience in the use of power plant instrumentation to have a working knowledge of process control.

Must have the working knowledge and skill needed to test, repair, calibrate and maintain electrical and electronic equipment associated with generating stations with limited support.

Must be able to perform necessary engineering calculations for test results, reports, performance and records with limited support.

Must be able to read, interpret and work from prints, schematics and specifications with limited support.

Must have a good working knowledge of equipment and clearance procedures, and the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work.

Must possess the appropriate State driver's license.

Must obtain and maintain all necessary certifications and licenses as required.

Must have demonstrated the ability to physically and mentally perform work in all areas and heights required.

Respond to callouts to maintain and support business operational needs and schedules.

Electrician App 4th Yr
Must have performed the duties of Apprentice Electrician 3rd Year or equivalent, and maintained all the appropriate qualifications of Apprentice Electrician 3rd Year, or the equivalent, and must be able to pass an examination and/or demonstrations as determined by the Company and in addition:

Should have 6,000 hours of power plant experience or equivalent.

Must have the working knowledge and skill needed to test, repair, calibrate and maintain electrical and electronic equipment associated with generating stations.   adjust plant instruments and controls, and be capable of detecting and making repairs to complex control systems.

Must be able to perform necessary engineering calculations for test results, reports, performance and records.

Must be able to read, interpret and work from prints, schematics and specifications.

Must have a thorough working knowledge of equipment and clearance procedures, and the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work.
