Solar Energy:

Job Description:
AREVA Solar is seeking a Senior Materials Scientist for our Mountain View, CA location.
Responsibilities and duties include:
  • Key technical contributor to the research and advanced development of optical coatings
  • Design and perform experiments to test theories of coating performance and underlying physical mechanisms
  • Create theoretical models of coating structure, optical characteristics, and degradation over life
  • Interface with manufacturing to ensure industrializability of coating prescription
Typical projects:
  • Advance the state of the art in air stable solar selective boiler tube coatings.
  • Develop rigorous models of coating optical performance from underlying temperature-dependent material properties and validate those models.
All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position.
  • Phd in pure or applied physics, materials science, or physical chemistry from Top-Tier University
  • Publishing record demonstrating scientific contributions and talent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of hands-on materials characterization: XRD, XPS, LIBS, ellipsometry. FTIR.
  • Research experience involving solgels, metals, and oxides.
  • Research experience in the modeling of optical or electronic properties of solid state materials.
  • A sound theoretical knowledge of solid state physics, crystallography, and optics (geometrical and physical).
  • A sound theoretical understanding of the optical theory of solids (classical and quantum).
  • Research experience in nanomaterials science: fabrication and characterization techniques.
  • Research experience with thin films, oxidation/corrosion, and high vacuum systems.
  • Research experience with deposition techniques including electroplating, sputtering, Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).
The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position.
  • One or more years of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Theoretical knowledge of thermal radiation heat transfer.
  • Experience with TFCalc or equivalent thin film optics software.
  • Proficient in stress analysis with ANSYS, Abaqus, or equivalent.
  • Proficient in Matlab.
  • Experience in solar thermal industry.
  • Failure analysis experience.

Sporadic (10-15%) domestic and/or international travel.
