ETS - Chemical Laboratory, a department within our PPL Generation organization, is seeking one student to work full time (40 hours/week) during the spring/summer semester 2012 (January-August), in Hazleton, PA. Position Summary A Cooperative Associate is a temporarily employed full-time college student in an accredited four-year institution of higher learning, who is offered a work-study program designed to give college students practical work experience in their field of study. This program often helps students determine career interests. Beyond the scope of the actual tasks performed, the student becomes familiar with a corporate environment and gains practical skills and knowledge to supplement their classroom experience. Primary Responsibilities 1. Support the Laboratory’s Quality Control program to assure that data is in compliance with national accreditation, internal standards, and government regulations. Maintains existing and assists in developing new analytical testing procedures for coal, water, and oil that provide desired data at minimum cost to PPL. 2. Verifies the accuracy of data provided to clients and regulatory agencies. Ensures documentation is complete and maintains all records according to corporate record retention policies. Writes reports for management, external customers, and regulatory agencies. 3. Performs regularly scheduled audits to ensure certification compliance. 4. Provides technical support for PPL on chemistry related problems and issues, especially the fossil power plants. This may include failure analysis, field support, and environmental issues. These efforts may require interaction with leadership or representatives of other departments, consultants, regulatory agencies or the general public. 5. Plans and maintains day-to-day manpower schedules and interfaces with clients for lab support and requests. 6. Assists with troubleshooting test equipment problems. Candidate Qualifications Candidates must meet the basic qualifications to receive consideration. Basic Qualifications - Enrolled in an accredited college or university program. - Enrolled in a curriculum leading to a baccalaureate or masters degree in Physical Science or a related field. - Enrolled on a full-time basis (12 semester hours). Students may not continue as a Co-operative Associate once they have graduated. - Have an acceptable overall grade point average, generally not lower than a 3.2. - Eligible to work in accordance with Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) regulations. - Able to provide an official student transcript and other required information. - 18 years of age or older. Preferred Qualifications • High level of PC skills, including MS Office. • Training in analytical chemistry and/or laboratory experience is highly desirable. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Ability to work with others and function as part of a team. • Ability to work outdoors and in a power plant environment with potential overnight travel.
