Job Description
Overview:

Supervises the daily operation of the chemical laboratory, all associated plant chemistry and operation of waster treatment systems. Interfaces as required with hazardous waste area containment/regulatory requirements and conducts required environmental inspections. Organizes and directs the actual performance of work required to maintain facility associated equipment and systems in a proper state of chemical control.

Responsibilities:
  • Implements and established practical, effective methods/procedures to assure continuity and efficient, dependable functioning of chemical aspects of the facility including Feedwater analysis and control, fuel analysis, etc.
  • Implements practical and effective test procedures within his/her responsibility area
  • Uses a proactive approach in resolving abnormal conditions. Reports/informs appropriate plant management of abnormal conditions and corrective actions.
  • Oversee the wastewater treatment areas to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the Boiler Cycle Chemistry programs at the stations to ensure requirements are being met during start up, shut down and normal operations of the units.
  • Oversees the fire side chemistry program to maintain proper back-end ph control and stack emissions control.
  • Oversee the Wet Flue Gas Desulferization processes and equipment to ensure compliance to emissions requirements.
  • Provides guidance pertaining to the management of the hazardous waste program including storage, shipment and all records and reports.
  • Provides leadership in the performance of preventive and corrective maintenance activities associated with laboratory and plant chemistry-related equipment and systems.
  • Provides training and guidance to all plant personnel on chemical safety, chemical handling and chemistry related equipment operation.
  • Ensures optimum utilization of employees, equipment, and material. Coordinates work between organizational segments. Communicates company policies and practices. Promotes two-way communications with employees and resolves employee concerns using appropriate resources.
  • Enforces accident prevention and occupational health work procedures and regulations.
  • Ensures safekeeping of materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Assign work and ensure employees are appropriately trained to accomplish each task. Explains work procedures and solves work problems. Authorizes overtime. Controls quality, quantity and promptness of work performed as measured against accepted standards. Recommends improvements and modifications in organization, complement, procedures, policies, standards, specifications, methods, processes, and equipment within area of supervision.
  • Contributes to administration of pay program(s) within area of leadership in accordance with department guidelines.
  • Conducts Performance Evaluations (in a timely, constructive, objective and accurate manner) to identify subordinate strengths and developmental areas and discusses career goals. Seeks opportunities to provide appropriate recognition. Counsels employees concerning work problems and productivity in a positive and productive manner

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Demonstrated experience in the application or control of water treatment , chemical systems and waste treatment operations and Wet Flue Gas Desulferization
  • Knowledge and expertise in environmental issues
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Job Requirements - Education/Training:

Required:

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted in lieu of a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or a closely related field.

Job Requirements - Certification(s):

Required:

  • Must possess or have the demonstrated ability to obtain MDE Licensing for Superintendent of
    • Waste Water Treatment Plant (Class 3)
    • Industrial Waste Water Treatment Plant (Class 2)
    • Water Treatment (Class 1)
  • Must possess or have the demonstrated ability to obtain MDE Drinking Water Samplers license.

Job Requirements - Knowledge and/or Specific Skills Necessary to do the Job:

  • Ability to work occasional rotating shifts, holidays, weekends and overtime
  • Possess a valid jurisdictional driver's license
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and time management skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work under pressure
  • Possess good hearing and vision
  • Ability to wear a respirator and other job related personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to meet (on an annual basis) appropriate physical evaluations identified by Health and Safety as prerequisites to performing certain task and training activities
