Job Description
We are looking for a hard-working engineer to join the Consultant Management Team at Xcel Energy!
The Consultant Management Team (CMT) at Xcel Energy is looking for hard-working engineers to manage outsourced substation and transmission line design projects. The CMT is responsible for a very large number of projects and consequently needs to spend time on the highest priority tasks to ensure all assigned projects are completed within their budget and schedule parameters. In this position, you will have the opportunity to develop into the role of project manager or project lead for assigned Substation engineering projects. You will be one of the main contacts for consultants and will need to be available for high level questions, help on unusual problems, and engineering oversight of projects, including ensuring that Xcel Energy internal processes for work order management, material procurement, estimating, and scheduling are followed by the consultant firms. You will also play an integral role in ensuring the organization meets their scorecard requirements on the assigned projects

Position may be located in Amarillo, TX or Denver, CO based on successful applicant. Strong preference for one position to be located in Amarillo, TX and one position to be located in Denver, CO.
Summary

Performs assignments designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities, requiring application of standard techniques, system analysis, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks. Tasks may include production of comprehensive system (transmission) plans, or distribution designs. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details or work and in making preliminary selections and adaptation of engineering alternatives. May partner with Manager, Principal or Senior Planners on assignments or in representing the company in regulatory matters. Must apply basic business acumen to maximize asset utilization. May serve as a technical resource for business units as needed.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Using prescribed methods, performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer. Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results, and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.
  • Performs routine tasks designed to provide experience and familiarization with engineering staff, methods, practices and programs of Xcel Energy. Assists with planning and design projects, provide technical support and guidance for design, construction and operations. Work with Supervisor on assignments with unusual or difficult problems.. Receives close supervision on new aspects of assignments.
  • Prepares schedules and estimates for specific projects, may analyze reliability, system deficiencies. May be involved with area teams to determine opportunities and set action plans. Participates in planning, engineering and operational study teams or committees.
  • Determines cost effective solutions. Prepares written recommendations
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and current industry practice.

Successful candidate will be placed within Xcel Energy's engineering hierarchy (level I, II, or III) based on qualifications and experience. Higher levels may require qualifications in addition to what is listed below.

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (equivalency to an ABET accredited degree would be recognized by ABET as having "substantial equivalency" or through a "mutual recognized agreement")
  • Engineer II: 1 year engineering experience in the utility industry (or related area providing equivalent knowledge ); Specialty Engineer: 3 years engineering experience in the utility industry (or related area providing equivalent knowledge) and passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) or possess EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certificate
Preferred
  • Passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) or possess EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certificate
  • Membership in Professional Society (Associate Grade) and/or Technical Societies (Associate Grade)
  • Familiarity with Xcel Energy substation design standards and internal processes is preferred
