Corporation Summary PPL Corporation, headquartered in Allentown, Pa., owns or controls about 19,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets, and delivers electricity and natural gas to about 10 million customers in the United States and the United Kingdom. Information Solutions, a department within our PPL Services organization, is seeking eight students to work full time (40 hours/week) during the summer of 2012, in Allentown, PA. Position Summary A Cooperative Associate is a temporarily employed full-time college student in an accredited four-year institution of higher learning, who is offered a work-study program designed to give college students practical work experience in their field of study. This program often helps students determine career interests. Beyond the scope of the actual tasks performed, the student becomes familiar with a corporate environment and gains practical skills and knowledge to supplement their classroom experience. Primary Responsibilities There are four Application Developer positions available within IT Business Solutions. Below are brief descriptions related to the responsibilities, projects, and preferred qualifications for each position. Application Developer – EU Support Position Entails: - Assisting in activities related to customer service. - Providing IT related support for our PPL Electric Utilities subsidiary. - Assisting in IT activities related to supporting a customer call center for PPL Electric Utilities. - Work with call center technologies - Installing and configuring computer applications - Contributing to functionality, reliability, and availability of computer based applications. - Developing partnerships by working with internal customers, vendors, consultants, and other Information Services personnel. - Performing limited range of project software activities (discovery of requirements, design, develop, deploy, and document) needed to achieve solutions to business problems. - Assisting with tasks for software development project management activities by contributing to estimating work, progress reporting, and task schedules. Co-op will assist in projects like: - Developing computer programs for our billing system, customer services, meter system, IVR system, etc. - Assisting customers with questions. - Analyzing and troubleshooting computer applications. - Configuring and testing application functionality. - Build and test software interfaces to other computer systems. Application Developer – Energy Marketing Position Entails: - Providing IT related support to our PPL Energy Plus subsidiary. - Contributing to functionality, reliability, and availability of computer based applications. - Developing partnerships by working with internal customers, vendors, consultants, and other Information Services personnel. - Performing limited range of project software activities (discovery of requirements, design, develop, deploy, and document) needed to achieve solutions to business problems. - Assisting with tasks for software development project management activities by contributing to estimating work, progress reporting, and task schedules. Co-op may assist with projects such as: - Developing computer programs to support the marketing functionality for PPL Energy Plus subsidiary. - Assisting PPL Energy Plus customers with questions. - Analyzing and troubleshooting computer applications that support our marketing floor and their back office support systems Application Developer – Electric Transmission Position Entails: - Working on some small projects associated the Generation Management System, a real time data acquisition and control computer system used to monitor and control the PPL Energy Plus; PILR, a .Net based information logging and reporting application used to document generating unit, transmission equipment, and computer system outages; the Hourly Integrated Data system (HIDP), an application that automates the submission and retrieval of generation and transmission data; Pi East, a critical data historian system used to store critical data transmission data. Co-ops may assist with projects such as: - Provide critical real-time information to PJM and various other PPL Energy Plus applications. - Provide accurate tracking of PPL Energy Plus and PPL Electric generation and transmission outages. Application Developer – Generation Support Position Entails: - Providing IT related support to the Generation and Fossil Fuel subsidiary. - Application support, light development, assist with performance tuning, learning, and document aspect of new Asset Suite application - Contributing to functionality, reliability, and availability of computer based applications. - Developing partnerships by working with internal customers, vendors, consultants, and other Information Services personnel. - Performing limited range of project software activities (discovery of requirements, design, develop, deploy, and document) needed to achieve solutions to business problems. - Assisting with tasks for software development project management activities by contributing to estimating work, progress reporting, and task schedules. Co-ops may assist with projects such as: - Enhancing current functionality within the Asset Suite application. - Implementing additional Asset Suite functionality to end users. - Analyzing and troubleshooting computer applications that support our Generation and Fossil Fuel subsidiary. Candidate Qualifications Candidates must meet the basic qualifications to receive consideration. Basic Qualifications - Enrolled in an accredited college or university program. - Enrolled in a curriculum leading to a baccalaureate or masters degree in Computer Science or a related field. - Enrolled on a full-time basis (12 semester hours). Students may not continue as a Co-operative Associate once they have graduated. - Have an acceptable overall grade point average, generally not lower than a 3.2. - Eligible to work in accordance with Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) regulations. - Able to provide an official student transcript and other required information. - 18 years of age or older. Preferred Qualifications Application Developer – EU Support Preferred Qualifications: - Rising or current Sophomore, Junior, or Senior with a major in Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Technology, Computer Programming, Information Sciences and Technology, or Information Systems. - Able to work in a team environment. - Able to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills. - Able to problem solve. Application Developer – Energy Marketing Preferred Qualifications: - Rising or current Junior or Senior Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Business Administration major. - Able to work on a marketing floor environment. - Able to work in a team environment. - Able to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills. - Able to problem solve. - Some knowledge of UNIX, SQL, MicroStrategy, .NET and/or Oracle is a plus. Application Developer – Electric Transmission Preferred Qualifications: - Rising or current Sophomore, Junior, or Senior with a major in Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Technology, Computer Programming, Information Sciences and Technology, or Information Systems. - Able to work in a team environment. - Able to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills. - Able to problem solve. - .NET experience is a plus Application Developer – Generation Support Preferred Qualifications: - Rising or current Junior, or Senior with a major in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Computer Programming, Information Sciences and Technology, or Information Systems - Linux or UNIX experience (e.g., UNIX/Linux shell scripting), SQL, Java, Visio is a plus - Able to work in a team environment. - Able to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills. - Able to problem solve.
