Job Description
Our Engineering & Design Outsourcing department has an opportunity available for a Substation Design Engineer in Minneapolis, MN or Eau Claire, WI. Minneapolis location is preferred.
In this role, you will apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. You will make decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and represents the organization in conferences to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work. This position requires the use of advanced techniques and the modifications and extension of theories, precepts and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines. The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work usually result from progressive experience.
The Consultant Management Team (CMT) is responsible for managing all consultants who are working on Substation and Transmission line projects. The CMT is responsible for a very large number of projects and consequently needs to spend time on the highest priority tasks to ensure all assigned projects are completed within their budget and schedule parameters. In this role the successful candidate will act as the "CMT Sponsor" on assigned projects. The CMT Sponsor is available for high level questions, help on unusual problems, and high level engineering oversight of projects and is responsible for ensuring the organization meets their scorecard requirements on the assigned projects
The CMT Sponsor defines the project parameters, provides guidance to consultants when they are having trouble resolving comments, and reviews and signs the appropriation & engineering estimate. The CMT sponsor will also perform a high level review of the Primavera schedule, high level, spot-checking of the design work, provide high-level guidance and assist the consultant resolve construction issues and participate in pre-construction and post construction meetings, and will perform a high level review of the project closeout and help the consultant resolve any unusual issues.
This position is written for an Engineer I position in the Xcel Energy Engineering hierarchy. The complexity and types of projects that the successful candidate will be responsible for will be consistent with their experience. The successful candidate will be placed in the hierarchy based on their qualifications.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and a good knowledge of related specialties.
  • Independently performs most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.
  • May supervise or coordinate the work of engineers, drafters, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.
  • Using prescribed methods, performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer. Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results, and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.
  • Performs routine tasks designed to provide experience and familiarization with engineering staff, methods, practices and programs of Xcel Energy. Assists with planning and design projects, provide technical support and guidance for design, construction and operations. Work with Supervisor on assignments with unusual or difficult problems.. Receives close supervision on new aspects of assignments.
  • Prepares schedules and estimates for specific projects, may analyze reliability, system deficiencies. May be involved with area teams to determine opportunities and set action plans. Participates in planning, engineering and operational study teams or committees.
  • Determines cost effective solutions. Prepares written recommendations
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and current industry practice.

Required for Engineer I
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (equivalency to an ABET accredited degree would be recognized by ABET as having "substantial equivalency" or through a "mutual recognized agreement")
Preferred
  • Passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) or possess EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certificate
  • Membership in Professional Society (Associate Grade) and/or Technical Societies (Associate Grade)
Required for Engineer II
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (equivalency to an ABET accredited degree would be recognized by ABET as having "substantial equivalency" or through a "mutual recognized agreement")
  • 1 year engineering experience in the utility industry (or related area providing equivalent knowledge) (Master's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum may substitute for the experience)
Preferred:
  • Passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) or possess EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification
  • Membership in Professional Society (Associate Grade) and/or Technical Societies (Associate Grade)
Required for Specialty Engineer
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (equivalency to an ABET accredited degree would be recognized by ABET as having "substantial equivalency" or through a "mutual recognized agreement")
  • Passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) or possess EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification
  • 3 years engineering experience in the utility industry (or related area providing equivalent knowledge)
Required for Senior Specialty Engineer
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (equivalency to an ABET accredited degree would be recognized by ABET as having "substantial equivalency" or through a "mutual recognized agreement")
  • Passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) or possess EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification
  • 6 years engineering experience in the utility industry (or related area providing equivalent knowledge)
