Job Description
As a system protection engineer, your work will directly impact the reliability of our Transmission and Distribution systems. Preventing relay incorrect operations by issuing accurate relay settings and performing accurate root cause analysis has a direct impact on achieving corporate reliability goals. As a member of our System Protection Engineering team, you will interface with almost every engineering department within the company (Transmission Line Design, Substation Design, Transmission and Distribution Operations, Area Engineering, Substation Maintenance Engineering, Transmission and Distribution Planning). This will afford you the opportunity to understand the different engineering roles and increase your overall knowledge of how our electrical system works.
As a system Protection Engineer, you will be responsible for:
  • Transmission and Distribution relay settings
  • Electrical disturbance analysis and root cause investigation/mitigation
  • Ensuring compliance with various NERC Reliability Standards
Typical daily responsibilities for this position include:
  • Performs assignments and capital projects including event analysis, fault studies, incorrect operations investigations, data testing, protection design, and system modeling. Applies and develops standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results, and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.
  • Performs routine tasks designed to provide experience and familiarization with engineering staff, methods, practices and programs of Xcel Energy. Assists with planning and design projects, provide technical support and guidance for transmission and substation design, construction and operations areas. Work with Supervisor on assignments with unusual or difficult problems.
  • Prepares schedules and estimates for the system protection portion of projects. Analyzes reliability and system deficiencies and determines protection requirements for substation projects. May be involved with area teams to determine opportunities and set action plans. Participates in planning, engineering and operational study teams or committees.
  • Determines cost effective solutions. Prepares written recommendations.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and current industry practice.
  • Rotational on-call assignments for emergency response.
As an experienced protection engineer you will provide training and support to the field relay technicians as well as mentoring and support to the less experienced engineering staff.

This position is written for Specialty Engineer (Engineer III) position in the Xcel Energy Engineering hierarchy. The complexity and types of projects that the successful candidate will be responsible for will be consistent with their experience. The successful candidate will be placed in the hierarchy based on their qualifications.
Required for Specialty Engineer
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (equivalency to an ABET accredited degree would be recognized by ABET as having "substantial equivalency" or through a "mutual recognized agreement")
  • Passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) or possess EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification
  • 3 years engineering experience in the utility industry (or related area providing equivalent knowledge)
Required for Senior Specialty Engineer
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (equivalency to an ABET accredited degree would be recognized by ABET as having "substantial equivalency" or through a "mutual recognized agreement")
  • Passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) or possess EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification
  • 6 years engineering experience in the utility industry (or related area providing equivalent knowledge)
Required for Principal Specialty Engineer
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum (equivalency to an ABET accredited degree would be recognized by ABET as having "substantial equivalency" or through a "mutual recognized agreement")
  • Licensed PE (Professional Engineer) certification
  • 9 years engineering experience in the utility industry (or related area providing equivalent knowledge)
Preferred:
  • Master's degree in field of engineering, math or science from an ABET-accredited curriculum
  • Membership in Professional Society (Associate Grade) and/or Technical Societies (Associate Grade)
