Job Description
Xcel Energy has a Natural Gas Engineering Director opportunity available - this position can be located either in Denver, CO or Minneapolis/St Paul, MN and will require travel throughout the Xcel Energy service territory.

Summary

Provides visionary and strategic leadership to achieve customer, investor and employee satisfaction. Responsible for the successful delivery of large gas construction projects including compressor stations, underground gas storage fields, gas transmission and distribution pipelines, BTU stabilization facilities, LNG facilities, and automated PLC & RTU control systems. Responsible to direct the engineering design, project management, and operational support across all of Xcel Energy's gas transmission and distribution systems. Accountable for implementation of organizational policies, attainment of organizational goals and objectives with emphasis on fiscal responsibility, employee/public safety and service reliability, as well as anticipating and positioning the organization to meet future business needs in a changing competitive environment.
Responsibilities
  • Provides the strategic leadership and direction for multiple engineering groups with multiple engineering and design disciplines. Responsible for the effective and efficient utilization of resources with emphasis on safety, cost reduction/control, reliability and compliance with regulations. Develops, approves and manages annual expense resource budgets. Participates in development of capital budgets. Ensures design estimate accurately cover actual costs and are work is completed timely, on budget and properly accounted for.
  • Responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of large and complex projects including compression & processing stations and their control systems, LNG facilities, BTU stabilization facilities, underground gas storage fields, transmission, distribution and gathering pipelines, and metering & regulation stations.
  • Leads and directs the annual planning process for the department, sets goals and objectives that align with the Business Unit and Corporate goals and objectives. Anticipates and positions the organization to meet future business requirements in a fast changing and competitive environment.
  • Provides for ongoing, effective and clear communication of the organizational vision, mission, key objectives and individual roles to employees and leaders. Responsible for engaging the workforce and provides a stimulating, challenging and rewarding work environment, consistently recognizing high performing employees, providing the appropriate tools and materials to perform the work assigned and ensuring the workforce understands the vision and mission of the organization and how their work contributes to the achievement of goals. Develops and inspires a strong commitment to employee safety, recognition and development. Responsible for succession planning to ensure the engineering area is prepared for the future. Communicates with and establishes effective working relationships with external entities and internal organizations outside span of control to maximize efficiency, responsiveness and resource allocation.
  • Provide direction and leadership to assure the services provided satisfy the financial and regulatory compliance needs of the company, regulatory agencies, customers, and shareholders. Applies industry and Xcel Energy best practices, competencies and success factors to establish performance expectations. Assesses complex competitive, technical, political and social issues and develops strategies to achieve results that consider the perspective of a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Responsible for building, maintaining and improving ongoing working relationships with internal and external organizations and service providers to ensure and provide maximize efficiency, responsiveness and resource allocation.

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • 10 years of engineering experience in the natural gas or energy industry combined with a minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in middle management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of natural gas facility construction techniques, and gas system operation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of codes/regulations including FERC, OSHA, DOT, EPA, PUC, environmental, land use, franchise & building codes
  • Knowledge of Xcel Energy's, management and budgeting systems and conventions
Preferred
  • Professional Engineering license
