The Substation Engineering department is looking for a civil engineer with structural, grading and permitting experience in order to engineer the construction of high voltage substations - critical infrastructure for the company's continued vitality. As a civil engineer in the substation engineering department you will apply both civil and structural engineering principals and practices. The structural aspect will require you to perform analysis and design on equipment-supporting structures and their foundations. This will include wind, ice, earthquake, short circuit, and equipment loadings. The civil aspect requires you to perform the grading on new substation sites using AutoCAD Civil 3D. This will include performing drainage calculations on the site to properly size detention ponds and drainage outlets and to balance the cut/fill ratio when re-grading the substation site. This position is written for an Engineer I position in the Xcel Energy Engineering hierarchy. The complexity and types of projects that the successful candidate will be responsible for will be consistent with their experience. The successful candidate will be placed in the hierarchy based on their qualifications. Summary This is the entry level for professional engineering work. Performs assignments designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities, requiring application of standard techniques, system analysis, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks. Tasks may include production of comprehensive system (transmission) plans, or distribution designs. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details or work and in making preliminary selections and adaptation of engineering alternatives. May partner with Manager, Principal or Senior Planners on assignments or in representing the company in regulatory matters. Must apply basic business acumen to maximize asset utilization.
