With these two major offers, AREVA's 48,000 employees are helping to supply ever safer, cleaner and more economical energy to the greatest number of people. AREVA provides its customers with solutions for low-carbon power generation in North America and all over the world. As the leader in nuclear energy and a significant, growing player in the renewable energies sector, AREVA combines U.S. and Canadian leadership, access to worldwide expertise and a proven track record of performance. Sustainable development is a core component of AREVA's strategy. Its more than 5,000 U.S. and Canadian employees work every day to make AREVA a responsible industrial player helping to supply ever cleaner, safer and more economical energy to the greatest number of people. AREVA Inc. is headquartered in Bethesda, MD. Visit us at http://us.areva.com or follow us at Twitter. The AREVA Renewable Energies Business Group: A world leader in nuclear energy, AREVA is resolutely committed to the development of solutions for CO2 free energy production. It is a matter of responding to the planet's essential requirements in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while providing energy to the largest number of people. AREVA is developing a portfolio of activities based on four renewable energies : wind energy, bioenergy, solar power and hydrogen power, as well as energy storage. Solar Energy: AREVA offers turnkey solutions for concentrated solar (CSP) technologies. AREVA's experience in thermal technology and fluid mechanics is well adapted to the concentrated solar power market. Today, the EPC services needed to establish a ready-to-operate CSP plant are fully integrated in AREVA's technology offer. Controls Engineering group: The Controls Engineering group at AREVA Solar is responsible for delivering the control systems for the Solar Steam Generator product. The major controls areas are tracking control, to ensure that the focused solar power is delivered to the receiver boiler tubes, and process control, to ensure that delivered steam conditions are at the customer's specifications. Tracking capability relies on highly accurate knowledge of solar position, reflector field geometry, and optical optimization techniques. Process control ranges from simple PID control to feedforward and parameter estimation to state of the art Model Predictive Control and other advanced algorithms. In addition, we develop the system HMI and historian functionality, automate system functionality to allow efficient operations, and select hardware and infrastructure platforms. We have need for expertise in IT systems, networking, instrumentation, software development, advanced controls design, optics, and thermal hydraulics.
The Controls Engineering group develops the full Solar Field control system, commissions the system at project sites, and maintains the systems after delivery. We continually identify and develop opportunities for performance optimization, feature enhancements, and value added services.
Job Description The Controls Engineer will be engaged in all aspects of the Controls Engineering Group's responsibilities as indicated in section 1-2. Specifically, this position will initially be focused on designing, implementing, and documenting the PLC and SCADA software for the tracking controls. This will also involve actively participating in the design and selection of hardware and instrumentation related to the tracking and process controls. This position will also play a large role in the commissioning of upcoming projects, including training local staff on the controls system and commissioning process. This position will also provide support to the process controls development efforts, including control algorithm implementation on both PLC and Matlab platforms, as well as controls algorithm optimization and automation of the Solar Steam Generator product. All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position. BS degree in engineering or Computer Science (CS, EE, ME or ChemE, preferred), plus 5 years of controls system design and implementation experience preferably with experience in power or process industries. Ability to develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships. Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills Experience with hardware design, software design, PLC programming and systems design for instrumentation and controls Experience with both Ethernet based and Serial communication networks Experience with MATLAB Experience with HMI/SCADA systems Proven ability to create clear documentation on technical topics for technical or non-technical audiences Excellent verbal and written English language skills Ability to travel internationally The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position. Experience controlling/modeling/optimizing solar thermal power plants Experience in solar thermal industry Experience with power generation systems Siemens PLC experience preferred Experienced with safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62061, ISO14121 Track record of successful project completion Experience simulating advanced control algorithms A self-starter who can work independently and also thrive in a dynamic team environment.
