Job Description:
AREVA is seeking a Senior Civil Structural Engineer for our Transnuclear location in Columbia, MD. This experienced engineer will be a key contributor in our structural analysis group. The person in this position will be responsible to conduct engineering structural analysis for all designs using either commercial software tools such as ANSYS/LSDYNA or by hand calculations using classical stress analysis.
Responsibilities and duties include:
  • Perform structural and seismic analysis to support the application for a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
  • Interface with designers, project engineers and other analytical disciplines (Nuclear, thermal, etc.) to ensure the structural integrity of the design.
  • Conduct finite element analysis on systems and components using either commercial software tools such as ANSYS/LSDYNA or by hand calculations. Types of analyses required are linear and non-linear seismic structural analysis, rigid body dynamics, modes and frequencies.
  • Provide design solutions and verification methods.
  • Participate in team meetings, technical reviews, design reviews, peer reviews and problem solving meetings.
  • Produce structural analysis reports and prepare related sections of the Safety Analysis Report (SAR). Provide technical guidance to junior structural analysts.
All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position.
  • BS in Civil or Mechanical Engineering plus 5-7 years of engineering experience. An advanced degree may be substituted for related exp. (MS 1-2 yrs. or PhD 1-3 yrs.).
  • Concrete structural analyses (mechanical and seismic loads).
  • Finite element analysis experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience.
  • A demonstrated background where quick thinking and problem solving plays a critical role.
  • Excellent organization, planning and priority setting skills.
  • Ability to communicate well with regulatory authority and customer.
  • Solid understanding of structural mechanics fundamentals.
  • Experience in concrete evaluation.
The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position.
  • Master's degree.
  • Familiarity with AISC, ACI 349, and ACI 318 standards.
  • Familiarity with ANSYS, LSDYNA, or equivalent codes.
  • Familiarity with ASME Section III (Nuclear) pressure vessel design or fabrication.

Sporadic (<5%) domestic travel.
