Job Description
Xcel Energy's Business Systems organization has an opportunity for a Business Intelligence Consultant to join our team! The individual in this position will have the chance to use their communication, project management, leadership and strategic thinking skills to help design and implement a new master data management system. Experience in a regulated industry would be helpful, but is not a requirement of this position. Depending on the successful candidate's location, this position will be located in either Minneapolis, MN or Denver, CO.
Summary
The Business Intelligence Consultant will be responsible for creating reference architecture (technical/architectural standards) and strategy around BI reporting and utilization of Enterprise Data Warehouse environment. The reference architecture will leverage current in-house technology, new trends in technology and industry best practice. The BI role will have both internal and external focus, serving as the point person for identifying appropriate BI strategy for IT projects that leads to business satisfaction and cost-effective management of BI portfolio.
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for execution and improvement of data governance processes to maintain master data as per established standards. Works with the data stewards to develop and maintain data governance policies and procedures. Responsible for documenting the data steward guide, change documents and conducts training as data standards are established or modified. Participate in data governance meetings and promote be best practices to maintain master date. Identify opportunities for data governance process improvement.
  • Work with business to understand source systems across our various business verticals and help facilitate rapid integration into enterprise data warehouse. Analyze data content and business processes to help business understand what information they need in order to run their business more effectively. Serve as a Subject Matter Expert on business data and consult with business owners on the characteristics, attributes and limitation of the data. Provide guidance and advice through reporting best practices and expertise in alignment with their business objectives.
  • Perform periodic reviews of in-flight BI projects to ensure its continued alignment with BI standards and to assist in bringing "unhealthy" projects back on track. Work with PMO to review the pipeline of projects and assist in defining the BI roadmap. Work with business users, project managers, enterprise architects, and BI developers to foster good communication throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop and leverage key relationships with I/T operational areas and other business operations teams to ensure business intelligence initiatives are appropriately prioritized within the overall scope of activities.
  • Participate in RFP vendor presentations to evaluate their alignment with the business need and our BI standards. Evaluate existing BI tools and processes to ensure continued relevance and user adoption.
  • Stay abreast of industry and technology trends to advise leadership on when to innovate and when to use traditional approaches. Apply technology and innovation to business solutions.
  • May provide direction and/or training of others.
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in business, information technology or related field or equivalent experience
  • Strong critical thinking skills with experience in master data management practices
  • Sound understanding of core business processes, industry trends, technology developments and I/T environments
  • 8 years business and I/T systems experience - general I/T operations with data analysis, business process and project management skills
  • Requires Master Data Management Consulting experience
  • Experience designing and implementing information solutions, such as Master Data Management, Data Quality, and Business Intelligence
  • Solid internal and external network of business and technology professionals at the manager level
  • Ability to lead small teams
  • Requires exceptional communication skills, time management and critical thinking abilities
  • Superior relationship management, project facilitation, project management, and problem solving skills

  • Masters degree
