Responsibilities: - Develop and execute a plan for managing all relevant local and state level external affairs relationships for GenOn’s business interests in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
GenOn business interests include a number of existing coal and natural gas-fired power generating facilities in the region, and the development of new power generating facilities in these same locations. - Determine appropriate contact and strategy for each relationship, many of which would be handled as part of this job. Responsible for drafting written materials, including presentations, press kits, public affairs campaigns, releases and pitch letters
- Charged with hiring and managing the appropriate number of outside consultants and lobbyists required to ensure coverage of all relationships.
- Primary focus would be on local relationships in communities where we have assets. This would include City Council members, Mayors, County Councils, Relevant Local Community organizations, Union Representatives, Local Chambers of Commerce, City and County Staff, and others.
- Maintain relationships at the State Level including State Senators and Representatives that represent the districts where our assets are located, Chairpersons and members of relevant committees, the Governor’s office, and other relevant State Agencies.
- Monitor relevant legislative and policy developments at the State and Local levels and be prepared to respond as needed.
- Coordinate with GenOn’s DC office to provide on the ground assistance with Federal relationships and to ensure coordinated messaging from the region regarding GenOn’s overall position.
- Engage in “crisis management” from an external affairs perspective as situations arise.
- Responsible for local and state media inquiries, in coordination with GenOn’s corporate based Media Relations group.
- Manage GenOn’s charitable contributions and employee corporate volunteerism for the region.
- Make recommendations to GenOn’s PAC board on donations that would maximize GenOn’s business plan in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and assist in executing on these requests.
- Comply with all applicable lobbying rules and filing requirements.
- Demonstrate high ethical standards and personal business practices that complement and reflect the values and corporate culture of GenOn.
Qualifications: Requirements Experience: Five to ten years of senior-level experience in a combination of areas including Public Relations, Public Affairs and/or Government Affairs. Preferred experience in Energy field. Individuals with this experience in Pennsylvania and Ohio will be given priority consideration. Education:
BA/BS degree in public relations, political science, business, or related field required. Advanced degree desired.

Thorough understanding of the requirements needed to work with local and state elected officials. An understanding of the confidentiality and appreciation of the political process is required.
- Because this position responds to the business needs of the company, unscheduled overtime work is a normal and a usual requirement of this position. The ability to work well under stringent deadlines with accuracy and a professional attitude is required.
- Travel may be required, periodically with little advance notice. The environment is fast-paced and dynamic with little or no direct supervision on a daily basis. Individual must be a self-starter with the ability to set priorities and goals despite conflicting issues before the Company. The ability to work in teams of professionals and to provide leadership as required to industry stakeholders is required. Must seek to become and be accepted as an informal and formal leader in the community, industry, and legislative forums in which they are working. Computer knowledge is essential. Superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with various levels within both in-house and external organizations are key.
- Negotiation skills and the ability to make quick and effective decisions will be a necessary skill. Candidate must demonstrate judgment and fast analytical abilities.
